Meet Dr. Spencer Johansen

“I Needed Help with TMD”

Chiropractor Virginia Beach Dr. Spence Johansen

Dr. Spence first went to a chiropractor when he was young. He experienced pain from TMD, or temporomandibular dysfunction. He saw a variety of doctors, one of whom told him his best option was exploratory surgery to see what the problem was. “The pain was so disturbing that I was distracted in school and constant headaches were affecting my life.”

Choosing the Natural Path

Dr. Spence’s father was remodeling a chiropractor’s office at the time. His father was from Norway and had a more naturalistic view of health care. His parents encouraged him to see the chiropractor.

After looking at Dr. Spence’s neck and jaw, the chiropractor said there was a mechanical dysfunction and with treatment, it would improve. Dr. Spence knew treatment was a better option than exploratory surgery, and “the outcome was great!”

An Education in Health

Dr. Spence knew he wanted to get into the healthcare field. His successful experience with chiropractic convinced him to apply to the world’s most respected chiropractic college: Palmer College of Chiropractic, known as “The Chiropractic Fountainhead.” After receiving his Bachelor of Science in the Health Sciences, Dr. Spence went on to earn his Doctorate of Chiropractic.

We’re constantly learning and evolving to serve our patients better.

Continuing to Learn

Dr. Spence continually strives to strengthen his understanding of diagnosis and treatment of spine and joint disorders by studying research and attending various post graduate seminars around the country. His particular area of interests are pain reduction, spinal reconstruction, nutrition, exercise, fitness, and rehabilitation. His love of chiropractic and genuine concern for others are two qualities that are felt by those who know him. At The Spine Group, we are constantly learning and evolving to better serve our patients.

Dr. Spence has studied continuing education courses on radiology and pathology, among others. These courses are taught by some of the foremost doctors in the field. When he’s not in the office, Dr. Spence and his wife enjoy staying active. Their busy lifestyle is enjoyed both inside the gym and outside, whether biking, hiking, jogging, paddle boarding, or doing some yardwork.
